Chamber wrong to give Awake Illinois affiliate ‘legitimacy’

I was dismayed to read in Friday’s Naperville Sun that Awake Illinois’ affiliate, Awake Americans, has been accepted as a member of the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Awake Illinois is a divisive organization that does not in any way represent the welcoming, inclusive nature of our community and does not deserve being given legitimacy by the NACC.

I would hope the chamber will withdraw its approval promptly.

AAUW backs proposal to amend city’s appointment process

AAUW Naperville Area and our 100-plus voting members strongly support the recommendations made by the League of Women Voters Naperville (LWVN) to ensure consistency and transparency in the appointments made to Naperville boards and commissions.

The LWVN commissioned a study to understand the current process used in our city for appointments and to compare our process to those in other cities that Naperville frequently uses as benchmarks. Based upon this data and the consensus input from all LWVN members, the recommendations to improve the process are:

Requiring an application for all appointees to municipal boards and commissions. The application process should be well understood by and accessible to all eligible Naperville residents.

Members of the City Council should be able to see applications to municipal boards and commissions.

Stakeholders should have input in the mayor’s process for making nominations to municipal boards and commissions.

Public availability of application information should be limited.

A standardized and well-defined interview process should be required for nominees to municipal boards and commissions.

Our branch fully supports each recommendation and urges council and all residents to support these measures for transparency and consistency.

Honor our vets on Memorial Day by saying their names

This past week, each grave of a man or woman who served our country at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery and Naperville Cemetery was decorated with a flag for Memorial Day. Volunteers walked the rows and paused at each final resting place as the veteran’s name and service was spoken aloud in an event organized by Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873 and Naperville American Legion Post 43.

Hearing the veterans’ names echoed the names we hear on the news when other tragedies occur. Each specific, and each forever gone. Most of the dead are lying beside loved ones as we living above do our best to honor, to remember, to adjust our sails.

Say their names. Say all their names.

Mary Lou Wehrli, Naperville
