Classes were canceled Wednesday at Buffalo Grove High School after a “small fire” broke out overnight at the school in Buffalo Grove, authorities said in a news release about the incident.

The school will remain closed Thursday, officials said.

According to the village statement, at approximately 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, the Buffalo Grove Fire Department responded to a fire alarm call at Buffalo Grove High School. call.

“Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from a room. A small fire was found and quickly extinguished,” the release states.

Township High School District 214 spokeswoman Stephanie Kim told Pioneer Press by email Wednesday morning that the fire was in a room in the English wing of the building. She said most of the damage occurred in that room.

Kim said there was personnel in the building at the time of the fire. But she did not immediately provide a head count or information on the work they were doing in the building.

However, no injuries were reported, authorities said in the release. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Arlington Heights Fire Department also responded to the alarm, the release states.

BHS is one of six high schools in the Arlington Heights-based school district. The school enrolls approximately 1,900 students.

SD214 officials were on the scene Tuesday night, according to the release.

Kim told Pioneer Press that all classes were canceled Wednesday because a fire restoration team would be onsite taking care of the damage. She said the closure was to give time for the officials to “address the smoke and any odors related to the fire.”

The district later Wednesday posted notification of a special school board meeting scheduled for Thursday night. According to the single-item agenda, the board would be meeting to approve “expenditure and repair to Buffalo Grove High School due to the fire.”

“Our restoration company continues to work diligently to clean up,” reads a post on the school district’s Facebook page.

Officials said in the post that the status of classes on Friday was still to be determined.

The fire at the school took place the same night that five teens identified as BGHS students were involved in what police called a high-speed collision in Wheeling. Four four of the students died.

Both the fire and the fatal collision took place almost a week to the day before the school’s 2023 commencement May 24.

The last day of the school year is June 2.
