Evergreen Park students lauded for ‘unusual achievement’
Mustang Pride Awards were presented Thursday to 24 Evergreen Park Community High School students who were recognized by staff members for unusual achievement both in and out of the classroom, according to a news release from the school. Their parents and guardians were invited to Thursday’s breakfast in their honor.
Students receiving the awards were Miranda Adams, Onyx Anaya-Crotty, Charley Burns, Seven Chandler, Braxton Delk, Billy Duffner, Lamiya Easley, Deijon Feliciano, Maya Fiecko, Marco Gonzalez, Alan Martinez, Joe Mays, LeeDean McCorker, Timothy Merriweather, Jr., Kara Mullen, Nathan Novak, Nick Powell, Jonathan Quinn, Londyn Robinson-Gwin, Neydelin Rodriguez, Aniyah Ross, Malik St. Clair, Suzy Summers and Brian Sansone.
They were presented a certificate of recognition, Mustang Pride T-shirt, pen and Mustang Pride pin.
Andrew students celebrate fine arts signings

A group of 18 students at Victor J. Andrew High School in Tinley Park gathered last week to highlight their plans to pursue training in the arts beyond high school and celebrated their media, visual and performing arts artistry at the 4th annual Fine Arts Signing Day.
Art teacher David Carroll said student Prada Howatt, who intends to study photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, “bridges the great divide between 2- and 3-dimensional imagery.”
“Her art translates into photographic sculpture,” he said.
Music teacher Mark Iwinski highlighted saxophone musician Zachary Soloman, who intends on majoring in Music Performance at the University of Michigan.
“During the pandemic, Zach and two others took it upon themselves to form a trio and virtually compete in music contests, quickly making a name for themselves and elevating their musicianship,” he said.
Art teacher Kerrie Klitz lauded student Phoebe Janecyk, who she said “has a rare ability to see in 3-dimensions and to sculpt it.” Janecyk will continue her sculpting and special effects at Moraine Community College.
Music teacher Christopher Moan said student Dylan Young, who will attend DePaul University majoring in Theatre Arts, “is a consummate thespian, writer, performer and soloist. He has left indelible mark on Andrew theatre”
Auditorium director Lisa Sison said student Sara Staudacher, who plans to study Theatre Production Design and Technology at Illinois State University, is a shepherd who made it her mission to take everyone under her wing and make sure they all felt as they belong.

English teacher Michael Stephenson said student Bella Pelini, who has enrolled at Elon University’s cinema and television program, “embodies fine arts on and off the stage.”
“I for one cannot wait to buy a ticket to a Bella Pelini film someday,” he said.
Free Mental Health Wellness Fair planned in Orland Park
Northwestern Medicine Palos Hospital will host a free Mental Health Wellness Fair from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 22 at its Orland Park campus, 15300 West Ave.
The program includes a presentation by psychiatrist Adnan Arif titled “Understanding the biology and psychology of anxiety and how to cope with it.”
Experts will be available to discuss mental health topics including medication options, addiction and substance use, depression and anxiety and treatment resistant depression. More information is at nm.org.
Orland Fire District hosting monthly barbecues
The Orland Fire Protection District and its firefighters are hosting monthly barbecues that are open to everyone.
The cookouts, featuring hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks, “are our way of saying thank you for your continued support,” said Betsy Dine, Fire & Life Safety Education coordinator for the District. “We also want to take this opportunity to meet and get to know our neighbors better. This is a great opportunity for us to strengthen our relationship and for everyone to learn more about what we do.”
The next barbecue is planned from 5 to 7 p.m. June 7 at Fire Station 2, 15100 S. 80th Avenue, Orland Park.

Bestselling author to visit Evergreen Park library
New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Berg will be at Evergreen Park Public Library, 9400 S. Troy Ave., at 6:30 p.m. June 2 to discuss her newest release, “Earth’s the Right Place for Love.”
Her book dives into the bond between brothers, first loves, and the power of kindness and is a precursor to her book “The Story of Arthur Truluv.” Wine and cheese will be served. Copies of her book will be available for purchase at the event through Bookies Bookstore.

Stray cat help at meeting in Palos Park
An information session about Trap, Neuter, Return for stray cats is planned from 10:30 a.m. to noon June 3 at the Palos Park Library, 12330 South Forest Glen Blvd. The meeting will present information on baiting and setting humane traps, how to transport cats safely and a list of low-cost clinics. Traps are on loan with a deposit that is fully refundable upon their return.
