New bistro opens in Palos Heights

Genetti Bistro, 12240 S. Harlem Ave., Palos Heights, opened to the public on Friday, May 5.

The cafe features breakfast and lunch served from an organic menu. Some of the highlighted items include organic coffee, herbal tea, cold brew, refreshers, delicious snacks and desserts and open-faced egg sandwiches. All food is organic, gluten free, GMO free and chemical free with vegan options available.

Owner Genet Pamphilis, of Palos Park, said she was happy to be located right in the heart of Palos Heights.

“Everyone in the Palos Heights community has been so welcoming,” Pamphilis said. “City officials have been wonderful and so have the residents in making us feel right at home here in Palos Heights. This is the perfect location for us.”

Palos Heights Mayor Bob Straz was very optimistic about the local establishment.

“It’s great to see local businesses create foot traffic for our downtown area,” Straz said. “I have had numerous positive comments about how the area has positively developed from a number from local mayors.”

Pamphilis, who is of Ethiopia descent, said she was hoping to eventually add some authentic Ethiopian items to the menu by summertime.

Blue Star Tacos closes in Justice

A taqueria that survived a bumpy start thanks to the pandemic shut its doors last week in Justice.

Blue Star Tacos closed at 8350 S. Roberts Road on May 7 “due to circumstances beyond our control,” owners said in a social media post announcing the closing.

Fans of the tacos and margaritas can take heart, however. In the same post, owners said they “plan to reopen in the near future at another location. We will keep you posted as to where our next location will be.

“We cannot thank our amazing guests and the City of Justice enough for your patronage and we will forever be grateful for the 3 years we were able to serve you!”

Co-owner Sandy Martinez did not return calls about where the taqueria might land.

Blue Taco has had two grand openings. The first one was in February 2020, a month before the pandemic shut down businesses across the south suburbs.

It reopened in August and had become very popular selling authentic tacos with a variety of salsas and homemade tortillas.

It was the second Mexican restaurant to bow out of that location. Macho Taco had been located there some years earlier.
