The DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee recently awarded the best four designs in their SCARCE sustainability design challenge.

Two of the four awards were granted to teams from Hinsdale South High School, including best overall LEED design by Claire Petrosius and Grace Koziol and best stormwater design by Owen Atkinson.

DuPage County Stormwater Management Director Sarah Hunn, Committee Chair Jim Zay, and SCARCE Founder and Executive Director Kay McKeen award “Best Overall LEED Design” to students from Hinsdale South High School, represented by teacher Adam Hallihan.

The annual program hosted by environmental education nonprofit SCARCE, the DuPage County Board and DuPage County Stormwater Management, challenges high school students with the design and construction of a building model focusing on Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) criteria.

“Over the past 17 years, we’ve had nearly 500 teams and thousands of students participate in the Challenge,” DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee Chair Jim Zay said. “I’m more impressed with the detail and sophistication of the projects each year.”

Students presented their models on April 18 at DuPage County’s JTK Administration Building, professionals in science technology engineering and mathematics fields judged the competition.

The challenge is meant to foster and promote environmental and stormwater education and create awareness of resource conservation and the carbon footprint that goes into construction, according to SCARCE.

Megan Lindberg and Katie Montana from Wheaton Academy won second place in overall LEED design, and Victor Hanson from Glenbard East High School won best energy design.
