Kane County Sheriff’s officers are interviewing “those with potential information” about a fire at Kaneland High School which canceled classes Wednesday.

Kaneland officials believe the fire in a bathroom at the school in Kaneville Township Wednesday morning was intentionally set. Classes were back in session Thursday after the building was evacuated and classes were canceled for the remainder of the day Wednesday due to the fire.

A Kaneland High School resource officer was treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns and another staff member was treated for smoke inhalation because of the fire, officials said. No students were injured in the incident.

Sheriff’s officials said they’ve taken over the investigation and obtained video surveillance footage from the school and are interviewing people who may have information about the fire to narrow down the search for a person or persons of interest, according to a news release.

Kaneland officials said in an email to parents that they have “every indication that this fire was set intentionally and our Kaneland High School administrative team, along with our school resource officer, are working with law enforcement officers to determine who is responsible.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Kaneland High School Principal James Horne at [email protected] or to call 630-365-5100.
