RUSE ATTEMPT: A resident over the age of 60 responded the right way Tuesday when an uninvited visitor wearing a construction-type vest and making an unsolicited home repair offer tried to get him to go to the back of his house, police said. He called 911 and the visitor fled.
The interaction was probably an attempted “ruse” burglary in which strangers — often wearing orange reflective vests and identifying themselves as municipal, utility or service employees — target older residents, police said. One scammer distracts the resident while collaborators enter the home and search for cash and jewelry to steal. In this case, the visitor said he was a roofer who had extra parts and was willing to do some repairs, police said, adding the resident was suspicious that the “roofer’s” SUV had no markings.
In a different case, the individual claimed to work for a seal coating company and needed access to the residents’ home for water, police said.
