Two important issues that need to be addressed by Congress but are not going anywhere are gun control and retirement age. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat assigned to the Judicial Committee, has been off since February because of a medical condition Feinstein is close to 90 and has been asked to retire because she is holding up the committee assigned to confirming judges. She refused stating she will be back soon. Hogwash. She is holding up progress. Term limits need to get these set for members serving in Congress.

Conservatism has proved itself a dismal failed belief system. By definition, it is averse to the very change that is inevitable. Its mere existence is resistant to adaptation. No matter how much you pray for a more religious society, democracy is the antithesis of absolute unchallenged authority. Like it or not, a majority of people are social liberals and always will be.

A large percentage of Americans are weary of all the whining and crying from Republicans that lose elections. Please stop playing the victim card and start behaving like a mature adult! We have been subject to your baseless complaints tinged in bitterness and hatred since 2020. Enough already!

The Democratic Party will not willingly replace Joe Biden on the ballot for president. Where would his global elite handlers find another candidate so compromised and so corrupt that would accomplish their objectives as well as they have done with the current administration?
Bill, Plainfield
The fact that Trump and Pence both showed up at the NRA rally in Indianapolis after all these massive shootings just tells you everything you need to know about these people. They weren’t the only ones. Every Republican thinking of running for president at all was also there in one form or another, Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis, Asa Hutchinson and on and on. They’re so terrified of this organization, they’d rather see children’s shot down than to admit there’s any need for gun control at all. How sad and pitiful pathetic.

To all the people writing in to Speak Out saying the Democrats are leaving the border open to all of the immigrants so they can vote for Biden, I hope you realize that any immigrant that comes into the United States has to become a U.S. citizen to vote and that takes five years to get that citizenship. So please change your narrative to another falsehood since that one is a lie!

The Democratic Party delegates have decided to hold next year’s convention in Chicago. Has any of these politicians bothered to read Chicago’s newspapers or watch the news on local TV stations. If they had, perhaps they would have noticed that the crime rate in Chi-town is totally out of control. Perhaps the manufacturer of bulletproof vests has already been contacted and has ensured enough vests will be available for each and every convention area. New mayor, new police chief, good luck.

What is the Democratic National Convention going to do when they’re downtown and you got a bunch of rioters out there destroying downtown Chicago? They don’t know what they’re doing by having people coming in here. There’s got to be some kind of accountability, arrest them all and put them in jail, automatic 10 days or something like that. That’s why nobody wants to go downtown. Jumping on cars, breaking car windows, threatening people. They’re shooting people downtown. Let’s do something about it.

Previews provide valuable insight in selecting movies. Will the movie be too violent? Will it make us uneasy? Last weekend, we saw multiple videos providing a preview of which scenes very likely will take place in what one might give the title of “Summer 2023 in Downtown Chicago.” Those weekend previews reminded me of summer 2022 and helped me make a decision. I’ll definitely skip viewing repeats of those troubling scenes!

The mayor-elect in Chicago says it’s lack of opportunities that causes violence and unruliness in the youth of Chicago. I don’t understand. Aren’t there schools in all neighborhoods of the city? And parks? And basketball courts? And bike or walking paths? The downtown attractions and beaches are accessible to all, but only the law abiding should be tolerated. And don’t you wonder where the parents and guardians of these marauding youth are? No one I know wants to visit or shop in Chicago anymore.

Those kids that rioted in Millennium Park and 31st beach should be identified and charged with rioting. Their parents should also be held responsible for the actions of their unlawful children. If they can identify the Jan. 6 rioters, they should be able to identify the rioters in Chicago. We should stop treating these punks with kid gloves and charge them as adults so they can see the consequences of their actions along with their parents. The streets of Chicago belong to the taxpayers of Chicago, not some unruly mob.

As I write, there is a community forum being held at St. Sabina Catholic Church so the new Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability can see what the community wants in a new superintendent of police. There are 77 communities in Chicago. Will this forum be held at St. Christina, St. John Fisher, St. Barnabas, Christ the King churches or are those the wrong communities. Chicago is the most one-sided city in the nation. And we are expected to continue to take the abuse. Like getting a beating.

Tom, Burbank, glad hear you support a women’s right to choose her own health care. You are also correct in looking ahead to what might happen in Wisconsin. The right-wing state Supreme Court has for decades supported every wacky idea the right has. Wisconsin is the most gerrymandered state in the nation. There are more Democrats in Wisconsin than Republicans, but thanks to extreme gerrymandering they have controlled the state legislature and the representation in Congress.
