
A 23-year-old Aurora woman was pronounced dead a day after the vehicle she was riding in was involved in a two-vehicle crash Monday that sent the car into a pond on the north side of the city, officials said.

Maria Gonzales, of the 1200 block of Coventry Place, died Tuesday from injuries she sustained in the crash, Aurora police said.
Police were called to the crash site on Bilter Road, west of DuPage Parkway, around 7 p.m. Monday after receiving several 911 calls.
The driver of the vehicle that went into the pond, a 23-year-old Aurora man, was able to free himself from the car and swim to shore, police said. Gonzalez, the passenger, was stuck in the car and rescued by members of the Aurora Fire Department’s Water Rescue Team, according to officials.
She was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, officials said.
The second vehicle involved in the crash, driven by a 45-year-old Aurora man, came to rest after striking a tree on the north side of Bilter Road, officials said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation and no citations have been issued, police said. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call the Aurora Police Department Traffic Division at 630-256-5330.
