A woman was critically injured and two others hurt in a two-vehicle crash Monday evening that sent one car into a pond on the north side of Aurora, officials said.

Police were called to the crash site on Bilter Road, west of DuPage Parkway, around 7 p.m. Monday after receiving several 911 calls.

The driver of the vehicle that went into the pond, a 23-year-old Aurora man, was able to free himself from the car and swim to shore, Aurora police said. The passenger in the vehicle, a 24-year-old West Chicago woman, was stuck in the car.

Four police officers entered the water but they could not get inside the vehicle, officials said. Aurora Fire Department Water Rescue Team members arrived and were able to get the woman out of the car.

She was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, officials said.

The second vehicle involved in the crash, driven by a 45-year-old Aurora man, came to rest after striking a tree on the north side of Bilter Road, officials said.

Both drivers were treated at the scene and taken to local hospitals in stable condition.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation and no citations have been issued, police said.

Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call the Aurora Police Department Traffic Division at 630-256-5330.
