“Grey’s Anatomy” actor Caterina Scorsone gave Instagram followers a somber life update on Monday, revealing that a devastating house fire displaced her and her three children earlier this year.
“A couple of months ago my house burned down,” the actor, who plays Amelia Shepherd on the ABC hit, wrote in the post. “While getting my kids ready for bed and finishing bath time, smoke began to seep up through the grout around the tub. When I looked down the hallway a river of thick black smoke had already formed and was filling the house.”
Scorsone said she had “about two minutes” to evacuate her family to safety. “We escaped with less than shoes on our feet,” she wrote. “But we got out. And for that I am eternally grateful.”
On a tragic note, however, Scorsone and her kids lost all four of their pets. “We are still sitting with that loss, but we are lucky we got to love them at all,” she wrote.
Scorsone said that her Instagram post isn’t about a fire but instead about community — “a love letter to the incredible people that showed up and the incredible ways that they did,” as she wrote.
She thanked the firefighters and the investigators who responded to the scene, a neighbor who swung into action, the parents and her kids’ school who donated toys and boots, her colleagues at “Grey’s Anatomy” and production company Shondaland who donated clothing and supplies, her sisters for helping with logistics, and her team, who “made everything easier,” she wrote.
“What we learned is that the only thing that matters are the people (and beings) that you love,” she wrote. “The only thing that matters is community. We would not be here without it and we are so grateful. Thank you.”
Scorsone also shared photos of her pets and her children in the home — as well as a photo of her burned-out living room — saying that she was uploading the pics “to honor the space we once called home, to say goodbye to the animals that loved us so well, and to celebrate that we have the only thing we ever really needed: each other.”
The actor — who joined “Grey’s Anatomy” full-time in 2014 after playing Amelia on spinoff series “Private Practice” — has three children with musician Rob Giles, from whom she separated in 2020
