Elmhurst police officers responded at approximately 9:30 a.m. Wednesday (March 29) to Visitation School in Elmhurst after school administrators reported that a student had brought three rounds of ammunition to the school.

Investigation determined there was no weapon involved and that the student brought the rounds to show other students. As a precaution, the school, at 851 S. York St., was placed on soft lockdown while police and school administrators investigated.

The ammunition was recovered and police said there were no additional concerns. The lockdown was lifted and normal school operations resumed later Wednesday.

School officials became aware of the matter after another student told a parent and the parent contacted school administrators. The Elmhurst Police Department continues to investigate this incident, but noted since the student involved is a juvenile, no further information involving the student will be released.

Police maintained an additional presence during school arrival and dismissal times to reassure students and parents. Officials thanked the student who witnessed and reported the situation for telling a parent and keeping the school safe.

Visitation School educates about 400 students in grades Kindergarten through eighth grade. A woman who answered the telephone Friday in the school office declined to comment on the incident or the school’s spring break schedule before hanging up.
