Sandburg CAD students earn honors

Several Carl Sandburg High School technology and engineering students competed and medaled in the Illinois Design Educators Association Regional Computer Aided Design competition held recently at Moraine Valley Community College.

Sandburg took home six medals, and had three regional champions, including seniors Jacob Floerke (intro CAD), George Pytel (3D modeling) and Alicia Ramos (machine CAD). Junior Jacob Sexton took second (architectural CAD 3D) and sophomore Sai Caliskan (3D modeling) and senior Vince Fennessy (machine CAD) each placed third.

Brenda K. Mitchell, who lost her son and brother to gun violence and has devoted her life to advocating for common sense gun legislation through a variety of organizations and advocacy groups, was named the recipient of the 2023 Unsung Heroines Award for Cook County’s 6th District.

“After the unthinkable happened to her own family, Pastor Brenda K. Mitchell turned towards her community to raise awareness for victims and work to ensure that no one else has to feel the immense pain of losing a loved one to gun violence,” said Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller. “From testifying in Congress on the impact of gun violence, to providing guidance and support in healing from trauma of all kinds, Pastor Brenda is an inspiration to me and the entire 6th District. She truly embodies the spirit of these awards, and I am proud to recognize her for her work to make the world a safer place to live.”

Palos South volleyball teams win big

The Palos South Middle School 8th grade girls' volleyball team won its fourth straight championship at the Southwest Interscholastic Conference tournament on March 11.

Both of Palos South Middle School girls volleyball teams won their championship games during the Southwest Interscholastic Conference postseason volleyball tournament on March 11.

The eighth grade team, which finished 18-1 on the year, bested the previously unbeaten Century Junior High team. This was the fourth straight championship for the Palos South eighth grade team.

Members of the eighth grade Cardinals team that was coached by Martin Duggan included Julia Koeppen, Hope Kohler, Emily Tylka, Leyalli Mansour, Nicole Stec, Kacey Fitzpatrick, Mya Slowikowski, Amelia Kadamus, Audra Zukowski, Lexi Mackey, Greta Rimkevicius, Nora Netznik, Maya Kobylarczyk and Aina Guzys.

Fitzpatrick and Kohler and were named to the SWIC all-conference team and Kadamus was voted as the tournament MVP.

Palos South’s seventh grade team also won its championship game against Grissom Middle School in the SWIC tournament. They also finished 18-1 on the year.

Members of the seventh grade team that was coached by Scott Adams included Ava Mackey, Teagan Jeffers, Sofia Wilson, Brooklyn Parr, Katy Zumerchik, Michelle Rozanski, Dorian Urquizo, Maggie Purtill, Makaleigh Terry, Maya Surdel, Molly Hackett and Sarah Cairo.

Parr, Wilson and Zumerchik were named to the SWIC all-conference team and Zumerchik was voted as the tournament MVP.

Olympia Fields’ Moore-Stone helps fight pediatric AIDS

Jordan Moore-Stone of Olympia Fields was among 43 students who participated in Baldwin Wallace University’s 22nd Annual Dance Marathon, raising over $5,500 to help fight pediatric AIDS.
