An Elgin man died at Advocate Sherman Hospital after being found shot in the abdomen at his home by Elgin police.

Oscar McDowell, 40, of the 1100 Block of Fairwood Drive, was discovered wounded by officers about 4 p.m. March 16 and died of his injury about four hours later, police said.

An autopsy conducted March 17 by the Kane County Coroner’s Office found the preliminary cause of death to be the gunshot wound but toxicology test results remain pending, a news release from the office said.

The Elgin Police Department Major Investigations Division is handling the case, which police described as being an “isolated incident.” No information on who notified police of the shooting or what might have led to the incident has been released.

Shooting incident arrests

In an unrelated case, Elgin police arrested two people on gun charges in connection with an incident that occurred about 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1400 block of West Highland Avenue.

Michael Fitzgerald Brown, 56, of Addison, and Kristian Gayle Branch, 41, of Carpentersville, face charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon by a forcible felon, unlawful use of a weapon by a parolee, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon with no Firearm Owner’s Identification Card, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and reckless discharge of a firearm.

Brown was also charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding, police said.

No information on the shooting incident itself was released.

Brown and Branch are being held in the Kane County jail in lieu of $300,000 bail. Their next court appearance is scheduled for March 31.
