La Grange District 102 Board of Education recently announced Christopher Covino will become the district’s new superintendent beginning July 1.

“I’m very familiar with suburban school settings … that is where I have spent all of my career,” Covino said in an interview.

Covino has been assistant superintendent for academics for Hinsdale Township High School District 86 for three years, and has worked in various educational roles for more than 20 years, including eight years as an English teacher at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, and four years as principal of Argo Community High School in Summit.

Covino will replace Kyle Schumacher, who announced his retirement earlier this school year and has served as superintendent for eight years.

District 102 encompasses seven schools in La Grange, including the Allen P. Zak Science Discovery Center which focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.

“I would love to express how excited I am to get to know the staff, the community and in particular the students of La Grange,” Covino said.

Covino earned his bachelor’s degree in English education and a master’s in English from the University of Illinois Chicago, he also holds a master’s degree in education leadership from Benedictine University and a doctorate in educational leadership and administration from Aurora University.

Hinsdale Township High School’s Superintendent Tammy Prentiss announced the district is looking for an immediate replacement.
