An Aurora man has been sentenced to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to driving under the influence in connection with a crash that seriously injured a passenger in his vehicle in October 2021, officials said.

Daniel Mayen, 29, of the 300 block of Hankes Avenue, was driving around 10:40 a.m. on Mitchell Road in Aurora when his vehicle crossed the center line into oncoming traffic and struck a car head-on, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The passenger in his vehicle was hospitalized with serious injuries, prosecutors said. Mayen’s blood-alcohol level at the time of the crash was .257, officials said, more than three times the legal limit of .08.

Mayen was on probation at the time of the crash after pleading guilty in March 2021 to possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, prosecutors said. A Kane County judge resentenced Mayen in that case to seven years in prison.

Mayen will serve both sentences concurrently. In accordance with Illinois law, Mayen must serve at least 85% of the DUI sentence.
