Student musicians and performers from schools throughout the south suburbs joined forces Monday to present a Black History Performing Arts Showcase, bringing the talents of over 400 youths to the stage at Governors State University in University Park.
An annual event prior to the pandemic, this was the first time the students from Rich Township High School District 227, Southland College Prep High School, Elementary School District 159, Matteson School District 162 and Park Forest-Chicago Heights School District 163 all shared a stage since 2020. It was the fourth time for the showcase, which took the theme this year “As One.”

Johnnie Thomas, superintendent of Rich Township District 227, helped found the event as a celebration of Black history and culture and a way to bring the school districts together.
“We are incredibly proud to have collaborated and to showcase our scholars’ talent and creativity,” Thomas said in a news release.
He said the event was organized by a team of dedicated educators who believe in the importance of celebrating and recognizing the contributions of Black Americans throughout history.

“The showcase provided a platform for students to display their talent, creativity and passion for the performing arts while also learning about the important role that Black Americans have played in shaping our nation,” Thomas said.
