Summit Hill’s Szewczyk named Regional Teacher of Year

The Illinois State Board of Education has selected Sara Szewczyk, a teacher at Summit Hill Junior High in Frankfort, as the 2023 South Suburbs Regional Teacher of the Year. Szewczyk, who is a 7th grade English language arts teacher, is one of 13 finalists for the organization’s Illinois Teacher of the Year statewide award.

“I feel so honored that all my dedication, hard work and intention that I have put into my teaching practices and classroom have been recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education with this incredible award,” Szewczyk said. “I am so grateful to even have been nominated, and winning South Suburbs Regional Teacher of the Year is such a huge career milestone and privilege that I am so proud of achieving. Like so many teachers, I put my heart and soul into my curriculum, instruction and school to best serve my students, and I am so humbled to join other amazing educators as Teacher of the Year!”

Lemont students receive ILMEA All-State honors

Lemont High School’s music program made school history as four students participated at the 2023 Illinois Music Education Conference last month at the Peoria Civic Center. Prior to this year, just four students in school history had been named to all-state performing ensembles more than once in their careers, and the school’s music program never had repeat honorees in the same year. Lemont nearly doubled its number of repeat all-state performers, as three students were recognized for the second straight year.

Senior Toni Sarussi (clarinet) was chosen as part of the Honors Band for the second straight year, while juniors Destina Sarussi (flute) and Nora Zhou (violin) both were named to the Honors Orchestra for the second straight year. One year after participating in the Future Music Educators Seminar, senior Alyssa Greer (trombone) was named to All-State Jazz Band.
