Zion police received reports of shots fired outside the high school at about 9:16 p.m. near the end of the Zion-Benton-Waukegan High School boys basketball game Tuesday night.
Officers were on patrol nearby and arrived “within moments,” police said. However, the shooter had fled before authorities responded. Police described the shooter as a male, dressed all in black, who fired a pistol numerous times before fleeing in a silver vehicle.
Zion police requested aid from other departments because of the number of people at the school for the game. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Zion police at (847) 872-8000.
Zion School District 126 said Wednesday that classes would not be affected.
“As a precautionary measure we will have an increased police presence, start our day on code yellow, and ensure emotional support services for students and staff,” the district said on its Facebook page. “As always, we take all matters seriously as the safety of our school community is our top priority.”
