West Aurora School District 129 this month approved capital improvement projects for work over the summer at a number of schools.

The school board recently awarded contracts for heating and cooling system work at Jewel Middle School and roofing improvements to multiple buildings as well as door replacements at West Aurora High School.

The board was informed in December that bids for proposed capital improvement projects were higher than in previous years due to high demand for projects in public school systems throughout the region.

“We are much happier this time around compared to our last conversations about bids,” West Aurora Assistant Superintendent of Operations Angie Smith said this month, referencing her statements to the board in December when bids were starting to come in for the proposed projects.

The contract for the main heating and cooling work at Jewel Middle School was awarded to Commercial Mechanical Inc. The company’s base bid was $2.69 million, according to board documents. The contract includes one alternate related to boiler replacement with Fulton Boilers for an amount of $309,000, making the total cost of the work at the school slightly over $3 million.

A contract for roofing improvements was awarded to Malcor Roofing for Washington Middle School and Smith Elementary School. The total base bid was $2.96 million.

As part of the contract, the board approved two additional alternates for roofing improvements at Washington Middle School for $250,000. A second alternate in the contract was approved for Smith Elementary to remove roof skylights for $23,800.

The total amount approved for the roofing work at the schools was $3.23 million.

A West Aurora High School door replacement project was awarded to Lite Construction, Inc. The company’s total base bid was $181,700.
