Four people were left homeless early Tuesday morning when a fire in a garage spread to an attached house on the city’s far northwest side and left it uninhabitable, according to the Naperville Fire Department.

Responding to a fire alarm about 1:45 a.m. fire in the 1600 block of Mulligan Drive, firefighters learned through a 911 call that one vehicle was on fire in the garage and a second was on fire in the driveway, a news release said.

By the time they arrived, the blaze had advanced to the front of the two-story, wood-frame house and was spreading to attached homes on either side.

Firefighters were able to limit it to the original unit and had it contained within 30 minutes of arrival, the report said.

The home’s four residents had evacuated before crews arrived thanks to working fire alarms and smoke detectors, and one required treatment at the scene, according to the report.

The residence was deemed uninhabitable by the city’s Transportation, Engineering and Development team.

Two adults and two children were evacuated from a neighboring house but allowed to return home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
