I have to say Charles Selle normally writes great local columns. I am a fan of his articles. But he is way off point with his column about local sheriffs that will not enforce the laws that pertain to “assault weapons” and how wrong it is. Yes, local sheriffs do get pick and choose what laws they will enforce. Case in point: I seem to remember how Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart would pick and choose what immigration and drug laws his office would not prosecute. Cook County sheriff’s deputies will not even serve eviction notices. So I do wonder. Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg says he will enforce the assault weapon ban, but will not go door to door to enforce the law. Well, how will he enforce the law then? How will the Lake County sheriff’s office make sure everyone in Lake County is following the law without going door to door? Asking for a friend.
The good, old buddy-buddy system
Remember several decades ago when we had a progressive police department instead of the current reactive force? Years ago, we had officers who truly cared about our city and the residents within. They took great pride in their job, their appearance and the quality of their work upholding and enforcing the state laws and Waukegan city ordinances. We had one of the best and most respected departments in Lake County. That flag has flown, and can be verified by speaking with the area citizens, lawyers, judges and state’s attorneys of both past and present. I hope the mayor doesn’t make another incorrect decision with the appointment of our next chief of police. It is time that the next chief is found outside the department in order to end the good old buddy-buddy system that has transpired over the past two decades. It is time that the chief is chosen for his or her proven ability to lead, educate, motivate and inspire the members of the force, and reestablish it back to the respectable, hardworking department that it use to be. Let’s not just chose the next chief because of race, sex or sexual orientation, as we need a leader that will bring back law, order and tranquillity to our once quiet community.

To the moron asking if other countries are helping in Ukraine: Yes they are, because Trump threatened to pull out of NATO if they didn’t start paying what they promised and were obligated to do. So the thought of Russia attacking Ukraine after Trump was out of office has them terrified that it could happen to them. Russia, China, North Korea and other enemies would love for us to get rid of all our guns like the liberals want so they can attack us. If you think the military is large enough to protect you from an invasion, think again.
