Women Who Care group collects for NAMI
The group 100+ Women Who Care of Will County donated $6,750 to NAMI Will-Grundy this quarter. NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness, is a grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
NAMI Will-Grundy representatives Cheryl Habeeb, Char Spreitzer and other volunteers were presented the checks Jan. 11 and said the donation will help fund the socialization activities and drop in services offered by the group.
“We would like to thank 100+ Women Who Care of Will County for their generous donation which allows us to continue to offer our support groups, education classes, and socialization activities at no charge for people with mental illness and their families. NAMI is a great place to talk to others who understand what you are going through and please know that you are not alone,” said Habeeb, the group’s vice president.

“It is important for all of us to take care of our mental health more than ever. NAMI Will Grundy wants to reduce the stigma of mental illness which prevents people from reaching out for help. If we need help with our mental health, we should reach out to a therapist, psychiatrist, or support group- just like we would get medical treatment for a broken arm or high blood pressure.”
100+ Women Who Care unites women interested in philanthropy who contribute to Will County charities together to increase the donation impact. At each quarterly meeting, members nominate charities. Three are chosen at random, and after a brief presentation, the members vote on one to support. Once the winning charity is announced, everyone writes a $100 check, on the spot directly to that charity. Teams of 2 or 4 are welcome to join. All charities nominated must be located in, and serve, Will County and must have 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. So far, 100+ Women Who Care of Will County has donated over $142,000.
The next meeting is from 6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at Coom’s Corner, 1225 E 9th St., Lockport. Information is at www.100wwc-will.org.
Sand Ridge birders plan Eagle Watch trip
The Audubon Society which meets at Sand Ridge Nature Center in Calumet City has scheduled a field trip to Starved Rock State Park a very popular eagle observation site on Sunday, Feb. 5.
When the area water ways are frozen, Eagles like to gather near the open water by the nearby dam on the Illinois River to catch fish. This is a particularly excellent area for eagle observation.
We will meet in Highland, Indiana, and then Lansing at around noon, and plan to arrive at Starved Rock about 2 p.m.
The group will stop at several places to look for eagles once they get to the Illinois River region. The group will leave for home about 4 or 4:30 p.m., with a planned stop at R-Place Restaurant in Morris on the way back for dinner and friendly conversation.
More information is at 219-718-3451.
The Sand Ridge Audubon Society Chapter meets at 7 p.m. the first Friday of the month from September thru June, unless that day falls on a holiday weekend, in which case it moves to the next week.
The guest speaker for Feb. 3 will be Rex Burris telling about his experience with solar energy on his house.
