Damning testimony: Anyone who believes the Jan. 6 hearings were a farce did not watch the hearings. If they had, they would be appalled at the misconduct of the former president and the people around him. The committee was made up of mostly Democrats, which is the GOP’s fault, but it wasn’t the committee that was testifying. Every person who testified was part of Trump’s inner circle except for two poll workers whose lives’ were threatened for doing their jobs.

Failure to protect: I don’t agree with a reader who thinks the president has made a comeback. Maybe a comeback from always making the wrong decisions like he’s been known for. He’s given us the highest prices ever at the grocery store, filling our gas tanks, heating our homes, whether oil or natural gas, and the mess at the southern border. He should be impeached for not protecting the American people, his most important job.

Sounds like a plan: Resolutions for 2023: 1) Read a good book and skip the evening news; 2) eat fewer fried foods, substituting frozen vegetable pizzas instead; 3) exercise more, including a brisk walk around the neighborhood until nosy neighbors call the cops; 4) vow to respect other people with the same dignity with which you’d like to be treated (with the possible exception of carjackers, telephone solicitors and politicians).

True or false: Has the world gone so far off its axis that we actually believe lies are “embellishments” and that someone capable of telling not just one but a dozen “embellishments” should be believed when he says this will have no effect on his ability to be an effective congressman? If we are no longer able to discern right from wrong — the basic precept we endeavor to teach children from the moment they can grasp the concept — let alone have have a conscience that makes us ashamed when we do the wrong thing, then then why even have elections. Let’s just let dictators tell us what to do and think, and be done with it.

How many have you seen? I’m not sure I agree with the some of the selections on the most recent Best Movies of All Time list put out by Variety — “The Empire Strikes Back” makes the list but “Star Wars” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” do not? — but trying to put a dent in the list seems like a worthy pursuit for the new year. And it will give you something to discuss other than politics in 2023.
