Setting record straight: President Trump made a speech recently in which he claimed our government is Marxist. That sentiment has carried over to a reader, who repeated the comment in the Speak Out section. To clarify, Marxism is a philosophy that believes capitalism is self-destructive and will eventually lead to the working class being in control of businesses, creating a classless society. The government, business owners and Republican/Democrat mega donors are not going to give their billion-dollar businesses over to the working class. We do not have a Marxist government.
He’ll fit right in: Newly elected U.S. Rep. George Santos, of New York, has been discovered lying about his past. Besides never going to college, he also didn’t work at two prestigious Wall Street firms and his grandparents are not survivors of the Holocaust. Of course, no one in the Republican party has demanded his resignation or even an apology. His seat in congress next to Matt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert, Jim Jordan and Marjorie Taylor Greene seems to be a perfect fit.
Optimism for 2023: As the new year approaches, we should all take a deep breath and be grateful we’ve made it through another 12 months, even if, for some of us, it was by the slimmest of margins. The year 2023 figures to be better — especially if Merrick Garland finds the inner strength to do his job.

Many of the hungry children’s parents do work but aren’t making enough money for essentials. I have a suggestion for you, go volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository to see what they’re all about.
Consider your older shoppers: I am not a spring chicken. When I shop at Jewel, where they stuff their items all the way to the floor, it’s a problem for me. I tried to get a bag of sugar that was on the bottom shelf and had to hold on for dear life. A male shopper came to my rescue. My suggestion to Jewel and all other stores that have merchandise on the bottom shelves is to put in handle bars.
