Bremen High School senior Janellie Flores has been named a semifinalist in the 2022-2023 Coca-Cola Scholars Program.
Flores was among just 1,557 seniors who were selected as a semifinalist from a pool of more than 91,000 applications from across the country. She is in the running for 150 college scholarships worth $20,000
Oak Lawn senior lauded by New York Times
Oak Lawn Community High School senior Tae Smoczynski received an Honorable Mention in the 2022 New York Times 100 Word Personal Narrative Contest.
An assignment requirement in her Creative Writing class, Smoczynski submitted the essay, “Not the News I was Expecting.”
“The Creative Writing classroom environment inspires and encourages writers to be creative and embrace their ideas,” Smoczynski said. “This vibe made it easier to write about something so deep and traumatic to me. To be met by encouragement by my peers and friends to pursue my craft is such a comforting feeling, and I have (Creative Writing teacher) Mrs. (Jen) Jepsen to thank for nurturing this environment.”.
Andrew High School’s McCarthy recognized
Andrew High School English Division Chair Mary McCarthy has received the Illinois High School Theatre Festival Administrator Support Award.
The award is designed to honor an administrator who has demonstrated a long-standing and consistent support to their school’s theatre program and outstanding support that goes above and beyond the normal support given by an administrator.
“Overall, Mrs. McCarthy is the voice of compassion and creativity,” said Andrew Theater Teacher Sheila Furey Sullivan. “She is a fierce advocate of her teachers, as well as a staunch supporter of students being exposed to art.”
Rich Township wins Township of the Year award
Rich Township has received the Township of Illinois Organization’s 2022 Township of the year Award.
The award was presented to Rich Township during the 115th TOI Educational Conference of all Townships in Illinois.
“We have worked extremely hard over the past 18 months to enhance our operations, streamline services and expand our outreach into the region,” Rich Township Supervisor Calvin Jordan said. “The quality of our operations is a testament to our board of trustees, our constitutional officers and the men and women work extremely hard on behalf of our residents.”
Eight installed in Father Perez KOC Council
Father Perez Knights of Columbus Council 1444 installed eight men into the council during exemplification ceremonies conducted recently in the Father Perez Clubhouse in Chicago’s Mount Greenwood neighborhood.
The new Brother Knights include Timothy O’Hare, John Monahan, and Michael Brown, Holy Redeemer Parish; Josh Davin, and Terry McMahon, Queen of Martyrs Parish; Michael Boyle, Dominic Lupo, and Casey O’Brien, St. Christina Parish; and Michael Pila, St. Linus Parish.
