H-F’s ‘Hurtcules’ competes in World Power Showcase

While high school’s indoor sports were just getting starting, Homewood-Flossmoor freshman Jhames “Hurtcules” Holley III was down in Miami hurting baseballs.

Holley participated in November in the 15th annual World Power Showcase. He earned an invite in April after hitting a prodigious 385-foot home run in Joliet during a 13U tournament.

He was able to display his skills for over 20 MLB scouts at LoanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins, meeting MLB star Jazz Chisholm Jr., who also spent parts of 2017 and 2018 playing for Kane County in Geneva.

Holley blasted four home runs during a home run derby and went 2-for-4 with a triple during the Babe Ruth Classic 15U game, which wrapped up the competition.

The New Lenox Elite competitive cheer teams recently celebrated a a season that culminated with Illinois Cheer Association State Championship honors.

The third grade team placed second and the second grade team took third place.

“I am proud of all the girls in our organization,” said New Lenox Elite Cheer Director Jenny Cryer. “They worked hard and their determination this season was undeniable. The dedication from the coaches and junior coaches was essential to the success of our program.”

Conservation leaders complete master’s studies

Having applied the tools of science, education and conservation to become leaders in conservation communities, three area graduate students in the Global Field Program and the Advanced Inquiry Program from Miami University’s Project Dragonfly finished their master’s studies in December.

Manhattan’s Suzzanne Bambule, a biology teacher at Joliet Central High School; Tinley Park’s Mary Doornbos-Johnson, a science teacher at Thornwood High School; and Homer Glen’s Jeanette Shutay, vice president of data science at Redwood Logistics, all completed their courses of study with a Master of Arts in biology.

Area students perform in Belmont’s ‘Requiem for Colour’

New Lenox’s Layne Boyce and Orland Park’s Amanda Miklos were among the more than 450 Belmont University members of the Belmont Oratorio and orchestra who recently performed in Belmont School of Music’s “Requiem for Colour.”

“Requiem for Colour” was a dynamic storytelling event which paid musical homage to the sufferers and saviors, the casualties and champions of Black American peoples in a requiem or mass for the dead.

Sauk Trail NSDAR recognizes King-Watters and Willis

New Lenox’s Nathaniel Knutson, who is a member of the Wartburg College men’s cross country team, was named to the American Rivers Conference 2022 All-Academic Team.

Tinley Park’s Kyle Kras recognized by The Citadel

Tinley Park’s Kyle Kras, a cadet at The Citadel, was named to the dean’s list and the president’s list for the spring 2022 semester.

The President’s List is one of the most distinguished cadet awards presented by The Citadel.

Providence senior Zinn Amos named semifinalist

Providence Catholic senior Zinn Amos has been named a Semifinalist in the 2022-2023 Coca-Cola Scholars Program.

“This is certainly a significant achievement for Zinn,” said Paul Houston, principal of Providence Catholic. “There were 1,557 Semifinalists chosen from more than 91,000 applicants. Zinn was chosen in recognition of his exceptional leadership, academic achievements, and devotion to the community. We are very proud of Zinn and his leadership, both in and out of the classroom.”
