Speak Out is a reader-generated column of opinions. If you there’s something you’d like to comment on in Elgin or beyond, send an email to [email protected]. Please include “speak out” in the subject line.

Why we need guns: In response to the Speak Out titled “Tell Santa” and the reader who wants fewer guns purchased, if Democrats want a lot less guns and more gun control then perhaps Democrats should stop writing and passing laws in the dead of night like the infamous SAFE-T Act that will put a lot more dangerous criminals back on the street! This puts all law-abiding citizens in danger and makes no sense. Every American has the right to protect themselves and their families.

Don’t blame guns: I read where Gov. Pritzker is going to try to pass a new gun control bill. If he would do his homework, he would find that assault weapons have been banned since 1936. What he is trying to do is ban is modern day sporting rifles, which are used by millions in a legal and safe way. You get a few bad people using them in an illegal way and you want to take them away from everyone. These firearms by themselves are of no danger to anyone. It’s the person who uses them to commit a crime is the problem but it’s easier to blame the gun.

Trump trading cards: Looking through the set of Trump trading cards I didn’t see a single one with him in an orange jumpsuit. I really think he missed a golden opportunity to make some real money as I’m willing to bet that one would sell out the fastest.

Appreciate both sides: If only adults could see Christmas with the same wide-eyed wonder as their children and grandchildren. On the other hand, wouldn’t it be gratifying if the next generation could fully appreciate the countless hours that went into shopping and wrapping their gifts? Santa gets way too much credit.

Easy to criticize: I would like to know what all these Monday morning quarterbacks would have done to get Whelan out of Russia. They blame Biden and give their MAGA leader Trump a pass even though he did nothing to secure Whelan’s release when he was president. If you don’t have a solution, you are part of the problem.
