A North Chicago man suffered critical injuries when he was ejected from his vehicle early Saturday near Waukegan, the Lake County sheriff’s office said.

Police said the 35-year-old was driving about 2:30 a.m. in the 12700 block of West Crescent Avenue when his Chevrolet Trailblazer crossed the centerline near Adelphi Avenue. The SUV then went into a ditch and struck a utility pole before coming to a rest on its side.

Authorities found the man, who was not wearing a seatbelt, about 30 feet from the vehicle.

He was transported to a hospital in critical condition, and he may be paralyzed from the waist down, police said.

High speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors, authorities said. The crash remains under investigation.
