I don’t often compliment Republicans, but I’d like to offer a big shout out to the 12 brave, moderate, conservative senators who voted in favor of the Respect for Marriage Act. The big negative is the religious exemption, but that’s politics. Without it, the bill would have been filibustered into oblivion. You never get everything you want, but without compromise neither side ever gets anything.

Wes, Orland Park

To JK from Tinley Park, in reference to your comment about AR-15 assault weapons used for killing five people and wounding 20 in Colorado. I agree with you. AR-15 weapons may be banned. Only in America, we keep putting up with these powerful weapons that should be used for war only. A few more points, hate crime is up 15% in 2021, conservative media and politicians Target LGBTQ people. This is part of the problem.

We recently marked the 59th anniversary of JFK being shot in Dallas? Why do I bring that up? Because our government couldn’t be trusted then and it can’t be trusted now. We weren’t told the truth about that assassination and we certainly aren’t being told the truth about Joe Biden and his family.

Tom, Burbank

The obvious corruption in Arizona’s rigged election exposes clearly our failure to assure a fair and honest result. If we cannot rely on our voting system being run honestly, without question, we will surely lose our freedom. Desperate people determined to take over. They fear honest elections and are getting careless.

Bill, Plainfield

I laugh at the ways/excuses all the Biden lemmings use Speak Out to show how strong he’s doing. He got up this morning without help. He found and was able to turn on the lights. And the biggie, he was actually able to exit a stage on the first try without being led off by Jill. Wow. If that doesn’t show strength, nothing does.

To M from Orland Park, the MAGA Republicans aren’t working for the American people, they are working for Trump who doesn’t believe in the rule of law. Also the Republicans in Congress don’t support law enforcement. Ask Marjorie Taylor Greene why does she support the criminals that rioted on Jan. 6 and destroyed the peoples house? You must have been sleeping when Trump was president. He didn’t pay taxes, he took classified documents, he is a thief a liar and the most dangerous person in America and only believes in himself.

Geri, Tinley Park

Jerry from Tinley Park, pay attention to the mess that the Democrats have gotten this country into to say nothing of the state of affairs in Illinois. Overwhelmingly, local and state governments in this country that are going down the toilet are being run by Democrats. Have you noticed how many people are fleeing Illinois because of Democratic rule in this state? Let’s not forget the SAFE-T Act that kicks in Jan. 1. Illinois will be the wild, wild West.

M, Orland Park

The media projects that the GOP House majority will seek revenge. In reality, they would follow Dem precedent. Pelosi removed Republicans from committees, refused to seat appointed ones on Jan. 6 Committee and twice impeached President Donald Trump on imagined offenses. So, if they do, it will merely be business the Democrat way.

David, Tinley Park

In response to Ted Slowik’s column and JK of Tinley Park: I see that there has been response from GOP leadership regarding Trump’s dinner with Kanye West, now known as Ye, and Nick Fuentes. Slowik looks for every opportunity to criticize the GOP. I also do not know what the significance of Fuentes’ residency being in Cook County Board member Sean Morrison’s district.

Pat, Midlothian

The day before Thanksgiving, I was shopping at the very busy Meijer in Orland Park. A hectic day to be sure, but I wanted to write this to express my profound thanks to the woman who, having seen a credit card drop to the floor, tracked me down to return it. A bystander who saw and heard the interaction said see, there are still good people around these days. I totally agree.

Robin, Tinley Park

Understandably, Homewood Jim’s MBA did not teach him how corporate greed may cause inflation, as it is a major factor in today’s economy. Pumping money into a pandemic laden economy gave relief to millions of American unemployed workers and troubled businesses. Biden has not declared war on the fossil fuel industry but has encouraged the development of alternative energy, thankfully. Corporate greed, COVID-19, supply chain problems, war in Ukraine, oil prices, are all sounder reasons for inflation. And jobs, consumer spending, production, wages are all up so, yes, we are better off economically today.

Denny, Orland Park

Leo, yes President Biden canceled the Keystone pipeline that would have carried very dirty oil for Canada’s tar sands, but not one drop of that oil was destined for the U.S. market. The pipeline would have brought oil to the Gulf Coast where it would have been loaded on tankers and shipped to other countries. What you miss is that the president has called on the oil companies to fully use the oil leases that they have and are not using. Why? One word, profits.

Paul, Tinley Park

With tax bills due out any day now, I have a couple of questions. Why do teachers need 15 sick days and two personal days that carry over and accumulate year after year. Why does it cost roughly twice as much per student in a public school as it does in a private school for what amounts to a lousy education.

Jim, South Holland

A thought for the day. Did you make someone happy today? Did you help somebody who needed help? If you did, you’ll sleep well tonight.
