Tiffany Stephens, founder of the nonprofit organization Kids Teen Rider, has filed the paperwork needed to run for mayor of Naperville in the April election.
Stephens was the only Naperville candidate for mayor or city council to submit her nominating petitions after the first day of filing Nov. 21. With the process closed as of Monday, she joins Naperville City Councilman Benny White and business business executive Scott Wehrli on the ballot.
Stephens ran unsuccessfully for the Naperville City Council in 2011. She launched Kids Teen Rider in 2009 as a means of providing transportation for Naperville District 203 and Indian Prairie District 204 students who need rides to and from before- and after-school programs, medical or other appointments, sports activities or situations in which a parent may not be available, the organization’s website says.
Also on the ballot are 12 candidates seeking to fill four open four-year terms. In addition to incumbent Councilman Patrick Kelly, the other candidates are Meghna Bansal, Allison Longenbaugh, Ashfaq Syed, Rebecca Malotke-Meslin, Josh McBroom, Nag Jaiswal, Derek McDaniel, Ashley South, Jodi Trendler, Nag Jaiswal and Nathan “Nate” Wilson.
Because 11 of the 12 candidates for council and White and Wehrli for mayor were in line to file when the city clerk’s office opened Nov. 21, a lottery will be held Dec. 6 to determine ballot placement. Stephens and council candidate Madhu Uppal will be listed last because they filed after the initial rush.
Three incumbents will not be on the ballot — Paul Hinterlong cannot run again because of term limits, Patty Gustin was recently elected to the DuPage County Board in District 5 and Theresa Sullivan has opted not to seek a second term.
Candidates who want to be on the ballot for Naperville school and park board elections will file their nominating petitions Dec. 12-19.
