Because we said so
It’s been explained many times here in Talk of the County, but we’ll try it one more time. In 1995, Ukraine had nuclear weapons. They were crazy over there. The whole world talked to Ukraine and told them if you give up your nuclear weapons and anyone attacks you, we will come to your rescue. We will be there for you. The United States told Ukraine that and Russia told Ukraine that. Now, Russia has attacked Ukraine, so they are not living up to their end of the bargain. We are living up to what we said we would do because we said we would come and help them. That is why we were there, because we said we would be.
Take care of home first
It was brought to my attention that the city of Waukegan is going to donate an old fire truck to a city in the country of Mexico. If so, that’s fine. But I always thought that you take care of home first. I am sure a rural area in this country could use a firetruck. Mayor, I have some people in Pakistan who can use an ambulance since you are in the donating business to other countries.
Highly offensive
I just read the letter to the editor in the weekend paper that ranked choice voting would be a good thing for Lake County. The dictionary defines rank as grossly course or indecent; highly offensive or disgusting; offensively strong as a smell or a taste. That’s pretty much what being rank means. Let’s get back to voting for the two people who got the most votes in an election. If they didn’t get 50%, one got 36% and one got 34%, the two highest people should have a runoff — not the third, fourth, fifth and sixth. Ranked choice voting is for morons.
Open people’s eyes
Sadly, what happened in Zion with a lady being killed just brings to light what people have been complaining about for the last four or five years. The speeds on Sheridan Road from the state line all the way to Waukegan, it’s just unallowable. Nobody seems to want to do anything about it. It’s a situation where we can’t get something done. But, when you have an incident like that and that don’t open people’s eyes, I would say that it’s time that we have people resign their positions.
