District 230 donates 8,500 pairs of socks
This winter will be a bit warmer across the south suburbs for those in need thanks to the combined efforts of students and staff at Sandburg, Stagg and Andrew high schools. The schools collected 8,652 pairs of socks in October to be donated to the Educational Support Professionals’ Association Socktober Sock Drive.
Andrew High School in Tinley Park collected the most, netting 3,169 pairs of socks. Roughly 1,000 pairs went to St. Julie’s Billiart Roman Catholic Church, 134 were sent to Smith Crossing Senior Center, 1,000 were donated to the Crisis Center for South Suburbia, and Catholic Charities Daybreak Center and All God’s People will receive the remainder of the socks, along with the 328 pairs collected at District Office.
Stagg High in Palos Hills filled 19 boxes with 2,666 pairs of socks, which will be donated to the Daybreak Shelter in Joliet and the Veterans home in Manteno.
Sandburg High in Orland Park collected 2,489 pairs of socks. Half will be donated to the Palos Park Women’s Club for distribution and the rest will be taken to Our Lady of the Woods Catholic Church for the St. Blaise Catholic Church’s pantry in Summit.
Franciscan Health effort nets 4,165 diapers
The annual Diaper Drive at Franciscan Health Olympia Fields collected more than 4,100 diapers for distribution to local community organizations to help families in the Southland.
A total of 4,165 diapers of all brands and sizes were dropped off at Franciscan Health Olympia Fields campus. Donations were made by hospital staff and members of the community, including a donation of 1,050 diapers from Xi Mu Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
Franciscan Health Foundation also received $470 in monetary donations from various donors, including the Flossmoor Service League, to purchase additional diapers at a discounted hospital rate.
Donated diapers will be distributed to local community organizations, including Respond NOW and Aid for Women. Some will be retained for Franciscan Health Olympia Fields Family Birth Center patients in need.
Flossmoor students honor veterans
Students at Parker Junior High School and Infant Jesus of Prague school honored area veterans last week by inviting them to programs on the school campuses in Flossmoor.
Students at both schools invited veteran family members to events that included presentations by students as well as information about plans for a new Veterans Wall of Honor in Flossmoor.
The Flossmoor Veterans Memorial project aims to construct a $100,000 Veterans’ Wall of Honor on a land owned by Canadian National Railroad north of Flossmoor Road and east of the Metra/CN tracks. Designed by Flossmoor architect Michael Matthys, the Wall of Honor will provide a tribute to all current and former Flossmoor residents who are serving or have served our nation’s Armed Forces.

Free sign language classes at MVCC
Moraine Valley Community College is offering free family sign language classes for families who have deaf or hard-of-hearing children ages birth through high school. The classes are taught by deaf instructors in sign language and written English.
A Level 1 class for beginners will be held online from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays fro Feb. 7 to March 7. In-person sessions for beginners are from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Feb. 8 to March 8.
People with some sign skills can attend one of the Level 2 classes that begin in March, with online and in-person options. Immediate and extended family members are welcome to take the classes, though space is limited. Information is at [email protected].

Spin studio event benefits Evergreen Park library program

Beverly Ride On spin studio in Evergreen Park offers free spin classes to celebrate its 21st anniversary Dec. 3 at the Evergreen Park Community High School Sports Complex, 2700 W. 91st St.
The event will also collecting donations for Evergreen Park Public Library’s Stacks Social Club, which was created to expand recreational opportunities for teens and young adults with disabilities.

Palos Heights Woman’s Club sets holiday luncheon
The Palos Heights Woman’s Club’s main fundraising event, Holly Jolly Christmas Luncheon, is at 11 a.m. Dec. 10 at Silver Lake Country Club, 14700 South 82nd Ave., Orland Park. The event includes a plated lunch will be served and a program, James Libera Covers Christmas, as well as raffle baskets and sale of members’ homemade cookies.
