Police shot a man who they say fled with a gun after officers attempted to pull him over on the West Side on Saturday evening.

The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. in the 600 block of North Central Park Avenue, according to Tom Ahern, a Chicago police spokesperson.

Officers had attempted to pull over a vehicle that had committed a traffic violation, but the driver evaded officers, Deputy Chief Ron Pontecore said at a news briefing. Officers came across the car again as it pulled into a garage, he added.

Officers then saw the driver get out of the car with a gun in his hand, Pontecore said. The driver did not drop the gun as police demanded and instead ascended a back porch behind a home, he added. An officer then fired his gun, striking the driver, he said.

The man shot by police is hospitalized in good condition and two guns were recovered at the scene, Pontecore said. Police took four more people occupying the car into custody, as well as an occupant of the apartment outside where the shooting happened, he said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) also reported to the scene of the shooting, Ahern said.
