Andy’s Frozen Custard eyes Garfield Ridge
Andy’s Frozen Custard is expected to open its first store in Chicago sometime in the next year, according to 23rd Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares.
Tabares told members of the Midway Chamber of Commerce last week the chain is expected to locate in a vacant bank building at 6366 S. Archer Ave. in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood.
Tabares said she was approached months ago by retail developer Eric Dams, who proposed bringing a cannabis dispensary to the site. Neighborhood leaders rejected that idea.
Tabares said Dams backed off the dispensary idea and came back with the Andy’s proposal.
Dams said Andy’s was planning to keep the building and transform it into a location with a drive-through.
He said they will need to apply for and obtain a special use permit, which they hope to have by year’s end, to enable the drive-through part of the custard shop.
According to Chad Wilke, an Andy’s regional manager who also spoke at the chamber meeting, the location would employ about 45 people in the summer season and about 20 off-season. Most jobs at the location will be part time.
Founded in 1986 in Missouri, Andy’s now has more than 100 shops in 14 states including sites in Oak Lawn, Countryside, Burbank, Orland Park, and Palos Heights. Another location is coming soon to LaGrange.
The bank building was erected in 2007. It was initially home to Bridgeview Bank, which was later sold to First Midwest Bank. Prior to 2007, the site was the longtime home of Archway Café, a family-style restaurant.
