Elmhurst police are investigating two attempts by three or four unknown suspects, at least one reportedly with a handgun, to enter vehicles in north Elmhurst Sunday morning (Nov. 6).

According to an Elmhurst Police Department Facebook posting and community alert, at 7:24 a.m. Sunday a witness saw suspects attempting to enter a parked car on the 100 block of East Columbia Avenue. A few minutes later, at 7:29 a.m., a witness saw the suspects attempting to enter a car on the 300 block of North Larch Avenue and then leaving the area in dark sedan, since identified as a black Kia Optima four-door sedan.

The suspects were described as three males, with possibly another suspect driver. They were described as wearing hooded sweatshirts and masks. At least one of the suspects was seen holding a handgun during the attempted thefts.

Elmhurst communicated a CodeRED message to alert residents while police worked at the scenes.

Elmhurst police searched for the black sedan and suspects immediately after the attempted break-ins, but both the car and the suspects reportedly left the area westbound on North Avenue. Police are working with other suburban agencies that reported similar incidents Sunday morning following the incidents in Elmhurst. Anyone with information on any of these incidents is asked to call Elmhurst police at 630-530-3050.

All are urged to call 911 immediately for any suspicious activity.
