As an intern, he covered emerging news throughout Chicago this summer, including the spread of monkeypox in Illinois, the Highland Park mass shooting and wide ranging human interest stories, from a profile of the 2022 Cheesemonger Champion to the story of a Chicago man who grew up surrounded by gun violence.
This fall, he has covered state and local politics, where in just a short amount of time he absorbed the complexities and wrote about a proposed state constitutional amendment, detailed U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth’s efforts to win reelection, broke down the race to replace Jesse White as Illinois secretary of state and assisted in the race for attorney general.
Jake has previously covered state politics for the Tampa Bay Times, social media misinformation for the Poynter Institute’s MediaWise project, local news for the Los Angeles Times and the 2020 Democratic presidential primary for the Concord Monitor.
Jake attended Duke University, where he led the student newspaper’s features team and helped run the journalism department’s 9th Street Journal.
