Marian Catholic seniors receive national academic honors
There are four Marian Catholic seniors who recently earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs.
Clare Smith, a resident of Homewood, and Antonio Soto, a resident of St. John, Ind., have received National Hispanic Recognition Awards, while Morgan Beamon from Crete, and Jayda Taylor from South Holland, have received National African American Recognition Awards.
“Throughout their high school careers, these Marian Catholic students have been committed to performing their very best in every situation,” said Steve Tortorello, principal at Marian Catholic. “We are very proud of these students for their achievements and know each of them will have great success in college and in the future.”
Hickory Creek places 2nd in state softball tourney

Hickory Creek Middle School’s softball team brought home another Class 3A Illinois Elementary School Association state runner-up title in late September.
This marked the fifth state appearance in eight years for the softball team at the school in Frankfort, and the second year in a row the Lady Tigers have finished as runner-up to Glenwood Middle School in Chatham.
Varsity softball team members included Kate Boender, Becca Brewer, Bella Cortes, Julia Donnellan, Grace Duncan, Charlotte Hickling, Reagan Johnson, Lila Kemerer, Jillian Kwiecinski, Alida LaDere, Caroline Marneris, Haley Muehlnickel and Lauren Muehlnickel.
Coach Mitch Stein praised his team’s efforts this fall, finishing 20-4 overall and narrowly missing out on a championship trophy, losing a 7-6 heartbreaker in the final.
“Above all, the girls showed passion for the game of softball and a love and respect for their teammates,” Stein said. “This was a true team effort all season with a wonderful combination of hitting, defense, pitching and sportsmanship. A season to remember.”
New Lenox’s Boss makes mark in forensics tourney
New Lenox resident Calvin Boss helped the Grove City College Debate Team during its appearance in the College Forensic Association tournament on Oct. 4
Boss and fellow freshman Joshua Xu took fourth place in the team competition.
