Speak Out is a reader-generated column of opinions. If you there’s something you’d like to comment on in Elgin or beyond, send an email to [email protected]. Please include “speak out” in the subject line.

Best and brightest: The intent of college was to provide advanced education for the “best and brightest.” It was never intended to make people intellectually “equal.” It can’t do that. As for linking it to affirmative action: nonsense. Affirmative action was designed to compensate people from being deliberately prohibited from exercising opportunities based on race. If you lack intelligence, skills or abilities, you shouldn’t be rewarded.

Good news, bad news: It’s all good news for Walmart employees this year. Not only will they have Thanksgiving off but they’re now free to get in line extra early at Best Buy!

In a nutshell: I can sum up the SAFE-T Act in two sentences. If someone is in jail, they can’t commit any more crimes. If they’re out of jail they can. I’ve summed up the whole article up in two sentences.

Baby boomer pride: The column about nothing making an aging baby boomer prouder than recounting their youth is truly the gospel according to Donna Vickroy. Thank you, Donna, for all the truths. My sisters and I will indeed wear our badges of honor.

Words won’t fix it: Each day this column prints both praise and complaints about what one political party or the other has done to either benefit or destroy the county. There is plenty of criticism and some credit deserved on both sides. But nothing will change until the people we continue to elect can think past themselves, make compromises and muster up the courage to talk about the family and societal issues that neither government nor more money can remedy.

Payback time’s coming: It was reported that within six months we will be in a recession and advice was given for us to pay down our debts. I’ve got news for those giving out this advice. If most people who have outstanding debt had the money, the debt would have been paid. It also was stated now is the time to get a second job to help you pay off your loans. You’ve got to be kidding me? Raising interest rates hoping to stop growth, now telling us to get a second job. It’s saying to me, you have enjoyed the good life, now, it’s payback time.

Hard to believe: I’m hearing Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker are in a dead heat for the race for senator of Georgia. Are the people of Georgia really that stupid?
