The COVID-19 pandemic may have altered plans for the New Trier Township High Schools 1971 reunion, but it did not stop classmates from gathering this month.

Called the 50 plus one (50+1) reunion, the classes of 1971 from New Trier East and West merged school spirit for a combined 50th high school reunion over a three-day weekend starting Oct. 14.

Chaired by 1971 New Trier East graduate Walter Radloff, the reunion committee included graduates from both East and West.

The reunion’s date had changed three separate times due the pandemic leading to a fair amount of uncertainty according to Radloff.

“We had no idea what to expect because we got a lot of rejections because some people weren’t comfortable traveling or being in a big group together,” Radloff said. “So they’re a little bit wary of it. When we had our 40th reunion, we had 465 people so we’re about half that (attendance).”

The weekend began with a Friday night event at Hackney’s in Glenview on Lake Avenue where classmates from feeder junior high schools mingled and dined.
