Recently I received mail that allowed me to renew my license remotely because of my safe driving record. It quickly reminded me of the laudable work of Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White. While I was elated by the recognition of a clean driving record, I equally was saddened by the fact that it’s the end of an era for one of the most successful politicians in Illinois history.

White is retiring at the end of what will be his sixth term in office. Illinoisans should celebrate his accomplishments. During a time in which cynicism and mistrust of politicians runs rampant, we have an elected official who has made us smile with admiration.

It’s unfortunate that politics is filled with so much acrimony, polarization and divisiveness. Candidates spend more time denouncing their competitors than focusing on their own platforms. Mudslinging, sound bites and name-calling are common during campaigns. Each side vigorously defends the actions of its candidate and says the opposing side is wrong.

Unfortunately, it appears to turn many away from voting. According to data from the Pew Research Center, historically, only about 56% of registered voters turn out to vote during U.S. presidential elections. Countries like Belgium, Sweden, Denmark and Australia have much better turnouts. During midterm elections, the rate of U.S. voter participation is even more dismal. It’s no different in Illinois.

Except for 2018, over the last five midterm elections, less than 45% of the registered voters voted. It’s this data that speaks to the remarkable success of Jesse White. Regardless of low voter turnout, it never stopped his supporters from voting for him. He carried every county — all 102 — in Illinois in 2002, and winning decisively in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018, accumulating well over 60% of the vote in those elections.

When you see a politician and forget to focus on their party affiliation, you know that elected official is doing many things right. Take, for example, programs such as the GDL (Illinois Graduated Driver’s License). It is one of the most successful teen driving programs in the country, requiring young people from the ages of 15 to 20 to prove they are good drivers before they move to full driving privileges. A 15-year-old must be enrolled in an approved driver education course and have the consent of a parent or guardian.

White also created a celebrated organ and tissue donor’s program that has saved lives and improved the quality of life for many people.

And, you don’t have to be an Illinoisan to know and appreciate the Jesse White Tumblers. Founded in 1959 by White, they have performed in thousands of venues. They symbolize strength and excellence like their founder.

White has taught us that it matters what we say, how we conduct ourselves, and how we treat others. He also taught us that politics is not just about helping those who vote for you, it’s about being a public servant for all. Through his actions, he led by example and exemplified excellence.

Thank you for a job well done, Jesse White. You will be missed.
