The National Museum of Mexican Art has opened its Day of the Dead exhibition titled “Día de Muertos: Memories & Offerings.” The 36th annual exhibit remembers people who have died over the past year.

Curated by Dolores Mercado & Cesáreo Moreno, the exhibit includes folk art, fine art and photography from artists from around the U.S. and Mexico. The exhibit taps into the tradition of honoring the lives of loved ones who have died and hopes to act as a restorative way to acknowledge and accept death.

This year’s ofrendas include ones created by Moos Elementary School students in honor of those killed in the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, and by the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art to honor those killed in the war in Ukraine. The exhibit also remembers people who have died during the COVID-19 pandemic, as it did last year.

The annual exhibit and related events and tributes have long been a big draw for the Pilsen museum.

Through Dec. 11 at the National Museum of Mexican Art, 1852 W. 19th St.; more information at (312) 738-1503 or nationalmuseumofmexicanart.org
