Students at several North Shore high schools have been named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, according to their respective schools.
On Sept. 14, New Trier High School announced 19 students earned the designation based on their scores in the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. On the same day, Wilmette’s Loyola Academy said two of its students received the same distinction.
Nine seniors attending Evanston Township High School were also named as semifinalists for the program, according to a release by the school.
Overall, there were more than 16,000 students nationwide named National Merit semifinalists, National Merit Public Information Director Matthew Budreau said.
Finalists are set to be named in February and leading to a scheduled announcement next April of 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million, Budreau added.
“To become a finalist, the semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received,” a National Merit statement. “A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.”
This is the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship Program and students involved represent less than 1% of all U.S. high school seniors.
