Skating a smash hit at Shepard

With beautiful late summer weather setting the stage, staff members from Shepard High School scrambled this week to transform the front parking lot at the school in Palos Heights into a roller skating rink.

While some students bought tickets in advance, they understood many more would just show up if the night offered pleasant weather. They were right.

As they worked to clear out all the parked cars and help set up the flooring, sound system and seating students started to arrive. Treats from an ice cream truck completed the occasion.

By the end of the evening, more than 150 Shepard students, some bringing their own skates, enjoyed the warm summer night and the chance to hang out with friends and family.

Grace Point Place residents raise funds with car wash

Suds were flying at a recent Oak Lawn car wash, but the people with hoses weren’t typical car wash volunteers. Residents at Grace Point Place, an Anthem Memory Care community at 5701 W. 101st St., Oak Lawn, recently did their part to help raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. The seniors soaped up cars and held a lemonade stand during the event.

“Many of our residents have volunteered all of their lives. Just because they have dementia doesn’t mean they have to give up their commitment to community service.,” said Shannon Dahlman, community relations director for Grace Point Place. “They really jumped at the chance to feel productive and help others.”
