It’s a season of different flavors. For those experiencing it as youngsters, there’s the taste of excitement and a bit of trepidation. Parents and guardians sending their kids off with a loaded backpack after a bus stop photo experience the same, along with a little sweet and sour — the wistful knowledge that each late August first day milestone is a tangible reminder of the passage of time. Those small people keep growing, and soon enough they will be big people.

It’s also a celebration of those same factors. Back to school mornings are an occasion for congratulations and relief. Now for a few hours, they are away from the nest, having experiences they would not at home. They’re discovering talents, carving niches, forming friendships.

The smell of school supplies offers the power of time travel, taking even those from generations far removed back to those locker-lined hallways, parking lot practices and football field memories.

Some of those memories are great. Others are terrible. But that late summer morning as the school bus pulls away, or the new driver backs out of the driveway, or the student grabs a book bag from the back seat and walks without a second look toward a fresh semester, offers the certainty that new memories are being made, and the hope that they will be good ones.
