A 29-year-veteran of the Skokie Police Department was named deputy chief Monday night.

Robert “Bob” Libit was sworn in to his new role at the village board meeting, during which Mayor George Van Dusen praised Libit’s “great service” over the years.

“It has been a pleasure to get to know you over these years. I have tremendous respect for you as does everybody on this board,” the mayor said.

Libit introduced his wife and three daughters, who were in the audience. He also thanked his police department’s “blue family,” many of whom were in attendance.

Robert “Bob” Libit was sworn in as deputy chief in the Skokie Police Department at the Aug. 15 village board meeting.

“Without them, I could not be here,” he said. “They’ve all helped me along the way.”

Police Chief Brian Baker praised Libit’s “effort,” “dedication” and “professionalism.”

“He is self-motivated. He does things for the good of the department and the good of the village,” he said.

Libit, whom Baker described as “laid back,” has served as patrol sergeant, watch commander and special enforcement team commander. His most recent position was professional standards commander, overseeing internal affairs, training and more.

“He has a strong background in both the administrative side of the department and the field side of the department,” Baker said. “He definitely leads by example. He doesn’t ask anyone to do anything he hasn’t done, or wouldn’t do. He’s looked up by all his peers and is very well-respected.”
