The Daily Southtown headline Aug. 3 was Video shows Oak Lawn officers punching teen. I don’t know the editor of the newspaper but the headline should have read: Teen runs from police with an illegal weapon. Stop giving criminals a free pass.
Tom, Homer Glen
A young man decides to run from police officers. He resists while holding tight to a small bag strapped to his body. Another officer joins and now both attempt to keep him from opening the bag to reach for what could be a weapon or a detonation device. A third officer enters the struggle and must deploy a shocking device. The bag contains a loaded gun and some drug paraphernalia. Because of the heroic actions of those officers this young man was taken into custody. He will now I hope suffer the severest consequences for actions he acted out.

With regard to the incident with the Oak Lawn Police Department and the Arab young man, I stand 100% with our Oak Lawn Police Department. If the punk hadn’t done anything wrong, why was he running away?
Irene, Oak Lawn
I want to commend the Oak Lawn police for their apprehension of a 17-year-old punk with a loaded gun. He knew he was caught and thought he could out run the police. The police did their job by catching him and took off our streets a lawbreaker. That’s their job, and it’s for Oak Lawn to be safe. Then comes the distractor who knows more about what happened. Funny, he wasn’t there. Thank you again officers. Keep up the good work, so I won’t have to look over my shoulder when I shop.

Speak Out sure contained a lot of anti-Muslim sentiments, both veiled and not. No 17-year-old should have a gun regardless of ethnic origin. I, like most commenters, don’t know enough about the incident to actually have a valid opinion.
Paul, Tinley Park
A key word is missing from the story of the young man playing the Oak Lawn police and illegally carrying a firearm. The word is punk. This kid is a punk who was treated to some discipline that was obviously lacking in his upbringing. punks do was punks do and they deserve the consequences of their actions.
