A man was killed and a woman critically injured Monday when the ATV they were riding struck a mailbox and a tree outside Huntley, the Kane County Sheriff’s Department said.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to an area in the 18N800 block of Ridgefield Boulevard in unincorporated Rutland Township about 12:45 a.m. on a report that two off-road vehicle riders had been injured.

The driver of the Polaris ATV, 24-year-old Elpidio Marcelo of the 41W400 block of Powers Road in Huntley, was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, a news release said. His 21-year-old passenger, a woman from Kenosha, Wisconsin, remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators do not know why the vehicle, which was traveling north on Ridgefield Boulevard, left the roadway and struck the mailbox and tree, the release said. Neither victim was wearing a helmet.

The incident remains under investigation. It’s not known whether alcohol or drugs played a role, the release said.

Anyone with more information on the crash is asked to call the sheriff’s office investigations division at 630-444-1103.
