Elgin man killed in crash with semi on Route 31 near McLean Boulevard in unincorporated South Elgin

An Elgin man was killed Wednesday afternoon after his vehicle crossed the center line into the path of an oncoming semi on Route 31 in unincorporated St. Charles Township near South Elgin.

Eric Castaneda, 26, was driving a Toyota Camry north on Route 31 about 1:55 p.m. when he collided with a Peterbilt truck north of McLean Boulevard, a Kane County Sheriff’s Department report said.

Castaneda was taken to an Elgin-area hospital and pronounced dead. The truck driver, a 68-year-old man from Wisconsin, was not injured.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
