The Joyce Foundation has announced the 2022 winners of the Joyce Awards, which seek to support artists of color in the Great Lakes area. Nancy García Loza, Nabil Ince, Michael Manson, Aram Han Sifuentes and Pramila Vasudevan will each receive grants of $75,000 to support their projects.
Local playwright García Loza will create the play “Pénjamo: A Pocha Road Trip Story,” which is about bicultural identity and ancestral homelands. A live public workshop reading will be hosted at the National Museum of Mexican Art.
Sifuentes, the other local recipient, is focused on a project titled “Citizenship for All: Storytelling for Immigrant Justice through NongGi Making” that aims to engage multiple generations of Asian and multiethnic communities. Participants will learn to create protest banners that integrate their own stories into the design.

In Indianapolis, Ince will work with residents from three historically Black neighborhoods as part of a songwriting residency at the Harrison Center, while Vasudevan’s “Prairie/Concrete” involves a series of workshops and events focused on the Twin Cities’ land and ecosystem in Minnesota.
Meanwhile, Manson will work with Living Arts in Detroit to offer the city’s Black and Latinx communities workshops and events about the 1970s street dance style Detroit Jit.
The Joyce Foundation is a private, grant-making nonprofit foundation based in Chicago.
